L\u2019area \u00e8 soggetta a un notevole impatto antropico e riceve consistenti apporti di acqua dolce, in particolare dal fiume Isonzo. Negli anni \u201970 e \u201980 del secolo scorso il Golfo si trovava in una situazione di eutrofizzazione, mentre oggi \u00e8 tornato ad uno stato meso-oligotrofico. L\u2019area \u00e8 stata oggetto di numerose ricerche oceanografiche ed ecologiche a partire dalla seconda met\u00e0 del \u2018900. Intorno al 1970 sono state svolte le prime osservazioni regolari sulla struttura dei popolamenti planctonici del Golfo di Trieste. Dal 1986 hanno avuto inizio i campionamenti mensili regolari per lo studio delle caratteristiche idrologiche, chimiche e biologiche delle acque. Dal 1999 il sito \u00e8 dotato anche di una boa meteo-oceanografica in grado di acquisire in modo quantitativo dati sulle condizioni meteorologiche in mare e sulle propriet\u00e0 fisiche e
