I primi studi di specie animali e vegetali nel Golfo di Napoli risalgono al XIX secolo, tuttavia lo studio dell\u2019ecologia delle comunit\u00e0 fito- e zooplanctoniche diventa oggetto di studio continuativo negli anni \u201970 del scolo scorso, in particolare con le ricerche a lungo termine condotte nel sito di Marechiara dal 1984. I campionamenti sono stati svolti con cadenza quindicinale fino al 1991, per poi riprendere a cadenza settimanale nel 1995. Nel corso di varie campagne oceanografiche sono state raccolte informazioni supplementari sulle comunit\u00e0 planctoniche a diverse scale spaziali e temporali. Il sito \u00e8 anche usato come \u201claboratorio naturale\u201d per condurre ricerche mirate in periodi limitati allo scopo di testare le ipotesi scaturite dai dati a lungo termine.     <\/p>
